“Wow! Look at this place!” Miranda exclaimed as she, Kathleen, Jay, Bobby, and Adam took their seats at the Backyard. She’d never seen anything like the outside amphitheater before. “There must be a million seats here!”
“Only about five thousand,” Kathleen said, and laughed. “Math really isn’t your best subject, is it?”
“Whatever. It’s huge,” Miranda countered, scowling slightly at Kathleen’s joke. “Besides, I’m getting a B in calc.”
“Woohoo, I think we’re in the midst of a scholar,” Jay teased, yanking gently on Miranda’s long blond ponytail.
“Okay, these are our seats,” Bobby interrupted, pointing to a row about midway toward the stage. “I can’t wait for the show to start.”
“Me either. I’ve only seen one or two of these bands before,” Jay noted. “I can’t wait to hear the rest of em.”
“It’s all bands that made it big after starting in Austin,” Adam explained to Miranda.
“Yeah, and next year, we’ll be here,” Bobby boasted. “Maybe even the opening act.”
Miranda smiled. Bobby definitely had big dreams. It was an awfully big jump, going from the opening act at Sally’s Pub on Wednesday night to playing at a huge amphitheater like the Backyard. She pulled her jean jacket tightly around her as they walked up the seemingly endless stairs to their seats. Even in Austin, the November wind could bring a bit of a chill to the air.
“I wonder how you get on the bill for something like this,” Jay asked.
“You probably need a good agent,” Kathleen suggested. “Someone who’s really connected. And people have to know who you are.” She reached into her backpack and pulled out a wad of colorful papers. “Which is why I plan to leave these on a few seats, in the ladies’ room, and maybe on a few windshields after we leave.”
Miranda looked over Kathleens shoulder to see what was on the papers. “Wow!” she exclaimed. “It’s us.”
“Sure is,” Kathleen agreed, handing each of the band members a copy of the flyers she’d printed up. There was a huge picture of the band in the middle of the sheet. Just above the photo she’d typed:
Sin-Phony
Appearing every Wednesday
at Sally’s Pub
Below the photo she’d typed up some reviews of the band’s performances:
“One hot show!”
“They rock the place!”
“Never heard anything like them!”
“Hey, where’d you get those reviews?” Miranda asked her. “I didn’t know any critics had come to hear us.”
“They haven’t,” Kathleen admitted. “I didn’t say the reviews were from critics. I just typed up things I heard people say.”
“What people?” Bobby asked. “Sounds like we’ve got some dedicated fans.”
“Sure, you do,” Kathleen assured him. “Missy said the first one, and that third one’s from me. But the second one’s really from someone who doesn’t even know you guys!”
“Truth in advertising. Is that what they’re teachin’ you at school?” Jay chuckled.
“I’ll show you what they’re teaching me,” she replied as she leaned over and stuck her tongue in his ear.
“Get a room, you guys,” Bobby groaned.
Adam turned his attention toward Miranda, who was sitting between him and Kathleen. He smiled at the look of excitement on her face.
